Slack is a messaging app for businesses and organizations. Conversations are structured into channels, each with a different focus. At DVS, we use Slack as a community hub where our members connect and discuss a variety of dataviz-related topics.
Accessing the DVS Slack Workspace
All DVS members can join the DVS Slack Workspace. If you did not receive an invite when you became a member, you can join here.
Access Slack via a web browser, or download the app on your devices for a better experience.
Browsing and Joining Channels
New members will automatically be added to the following channels:
- Announcements (for DVS-wide announcements),
- Introductions (for new members to introduce themselves)
- General (for general discussion)
To browse the 70+ public channels available to you, simply click the 'Channel Browser' link or the '+' that will appear when you hover over the Channels header while in the app. Click the Join button for channels that match your interests.
You can explore all available channels using the Pollen app:
If you don't see a channel you think should be there, please suggest it in the #dvs-suggestions channel.

How do I create a poll?
You can create simple polls by asking people to vote using emoji reactions. For more complex polls, we have installed the Polly app. An introduction to using Polly can be found here. Note that DVS is on the free plan for Polly, which means that each user is limited to 25 responses per month.[1]
What do I do if I have questions about Slack?
